Rajya Sabha Polls: Rajasthan Cong MLA writes to EC, alleges horse trading bid by Subhash Chandra, BJP

Congress MP and Deputy Chief Whip of the Rajasthan Assembly, Mahendra Choudhary, has demanded that the Electoral Commission (EC) take action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as Subhash Chandra, the Rajya independent candidate Sabha backed by the BJP, for allegedly embracing horse trading and corrupt practices, ahead of the June 10 elections in Rajya Sabha. In his letter to the Chief Electoral Officer on Tuesday, Choudhary pointed out that the total number of MPs in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly is 200 and that the ruling party in the state, Congress, has the support of 126 MPs, including 108 Congress MPs, 13 from the Independents, two from the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP), two from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and one from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

Choudhary said the BJP has 71 MPs in the state and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) led by Hanuman Beniwal has three MPs. “Previously there was an alliance between the BJP and the RLP, but now that alliance is broken,” he said.

He said Congress had 126 votes to the 123 needed to win three seats, while Chandra had 33 votes and was eight MPs short of winning. Explaining the statistics, Choudhary said: “Given the total number of MPs supporting the Congress, it is clear that the party can directly elect three MPs from Rajya Sabha. The weight of an MP’s vote was estimated at 100 during this Rajya Sabha election. It means a member of Rajya Sabha will be elected out of 4001 weighted votes. It means that each elected member of Rajya Sabha needs 40.1 (40.1 x 100=4001) votes from MPs. According to this, 41 MPs can choose a member of Rajya Sabha. Congress requires 123 votes to elect three MPs, while Congress has the support of 126 MPs,” he explained.

Congress nominated Randeep Surjewala, Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari for the upper house of Rajasthan parliament. The BJP has lined up Ghanshyam Tiwari for Rajasthan’s Rajya Sabha polls. “Subhash Chandra is an independent candidate from Rajya Sabha backed by the BJP. It is clear that the 10 nominators who endorsed Subhash Chandra’s nomination papers are BJP MPs from Rajasthan. Not a single independent MP endorsed the Subhash Chandra’s nomination paper, said the Congressman.

To choose a Rajya Sabha candidate, the BJP has 41 MPs and 30 additional votes. If RLP MPs are also included, then BJP + RLP only has 33 additional votes, he said. “Since a member of Rajya Sabha cannot be elected with less than 41 MP votes, Subhash Chandra is plotting a malicious plot to win an RS seat by force through bargaining, money power and intimidation of central government agencies like the Directorate of Law Enforcement, the Central Bureau of Investigation and Income Tax,” Choudhary alleged.

The Congress leader has demanded a criminal case and thorough investigation into the horse trade in order to conduct free, fair and corruption-free elections in Rajya Sabha. “On one side, BJP and Subhash Chandra claim to have cross vote of MPs, and on the other, BJP is threatening ED and income tax. This is a legal violation. that, the electoral commission and the police should take necessary constitutional and legal action against the President of Rajasthan BJP, the leader of the Legislative Party of Rajasthan BJP, the BJP backed independent candidate Subhash Chandra and prosecute them criminally,” said the congressman.
